Happy faces
An interesting article over at scienceblog.com summarise the following:
A new study by sociologists at the University of Maryland concludes that unhappy people watch more TV, while people who describe themselves as very happy spend more time reading and socializing.
And especially in such depressing times where people are watching their wallets, many will keep themselves at home and watch the box. The study highlights that watching TV are quick fixes to bring attention off depressing news but on the long term, offers little benefits.
The study went to the extend to define watching TV as addicitive.
The time I spend infront of the TV screens are limited to less than 4 hours weekly. That is around 30 mintues a day, around 10 in the morning as I down breakfast and maybe another 10 in those evenings where I manage to get back in time for dinner. Watching television had very little value to me, less the sometimes interesting documentary that could be showing.
The last time where I really follow anything was “Child Of Our TIme“. An outstanding documentary abour bringing up children. Super Nanny was also another nice show but it get repetitive after some time. Too bad Boston Legal is not airing, else it will, too be on my watchlist. Of course in moderation.
Personally, the best channel is channel bittorrent. Nothing beats that.
Speaking of Happiness and back the study, the study mention that happier people spend more time reading and socializing. I read more than I socialize and am working hard on the socializing part.
For the readers, I have this theory:
The happiness level experienced by a person is inversely proportional to the number of times he/she had a meal alone in a given time frame.
Pardon the mathematical approach to describe the theory. The statement arise from my personal experience, both self experienced and observation of close friends and strangers.
With that, I did tell myself that should ever I learn of a friend who is having lunch/dinner alone, I will make a point to meet them up for the meal. It does not take much but it will mean a lot, especially in such time where everyone can do with a little encouragement.
